DEFINITION - Jigsaw is a Web server from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that is designed for the purpose of demonstrating new Web protocols and other features. Jigsaw is written in the Java programming language and made available as open source software. You can download it from the W3C site in either a Unix or a Windows 2000 version.

Although Jigsaw is intended to be a demonstration platform rather than a fully capable Web server, the W3C reports that it performs as well as the CERN server and provides much of the usual Web server support such as proxy server capability, virtual hosting, and support for common gateway interface. Jigsaw can also be used for delivering pages built or modified with Personal Home Page and JSP scripts.
